Peter Merkel, MD, MPH

Dr. Merkel is Director of the Penn Vasculitis Center and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, and Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is the Principal Investigator of the Vasculitis Clinical Research Consortium and the Vasculitis Patient-Powered Research Network.

Dr. Merkel completed medical school at Yale University, internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and rheumatology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has also held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine. He has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH, FDA, and PCORI-funded studies focused on clinical and translational research in vasculitis.

In addition to his leadership and research roles, he provides clinical care for patients with vasculitis and other systemic autoimmune diseases.
