Why do I participate in research?

“Prior to developing Behçet’s disease in 2020, I was a dedicated High School teacher and an active member in my community. I was extremely active and enjoyed extreme sports. I started showing symptoms of Behçet’s disease in 2016. Unfortunately, I could not get any medical professional to address my concerns. I learned early on that I would have to be an advocate for myself. After losing thirty-five pounds and suffering from severe complications, I was sent to a specialist who was familiar with the disease. The specialist confirmed my suspicions, and it was then that I made the decision that I would not become a victim of my disease, but a survivor.

After being chosen as a Vasculitis Patient Hero last year, I was recently approached to advocate for the Vasculitis Patient-Powered Research Network. I believe that their continued research and collection of valuable data will move us closer to a better understanding of these diseases and finding cures for them. By becoming involved in the VPPRN, members will have a chance to make a difference, not only in their own lives, but in the lives of those afflicted in future generations.”
